For the The New York Times: A Family Separated

by Kendrick Brinson | 01.05.2010

Both David Walter Banks and I contributed to this New York Times slideshow about a family separated so they could live. It’s from an ongoing story about Atlanta’s Grady Hospital discontinuing dialysis for patients who cannot afford it.

Eduardo and his father Roberto have been separated from his mother and little brother because Eduardo’s mother Monica had to return to Mexico to continue dialysis after Grady Hospital would no longer treat her. Roberto stayed in the United States so he could send the money he makes to her in Mexico. Eduardo could not go to Mexico with his mother and brother because he is not legally documented here. So for Maria to live, her family must live separated. I tagged along to a laundry mat where Roberto did laundry–something Monica would have done if she were home–and then back to their home for some portraits.

Nice series Kendrick, I liked the one of the son sitting on his front steps a lot.
