It’s no secret that I go for walks when my brain gets too cluttered to make much in the way of forward motion. Some days it’s bookkeeping, some days answering a zillion emails, and some days I just wake up and put the wrong foot on the ground first. At any rate, an hour of two of walking usually clears things up which is, incidentally, how I came to find myself trekking around Denver’s City Park over the weekend. I’ve got a couple of substantial projects to edit that have left me feeling like every time I open them up , Andre the Giant creeps up out of the shadows and pile drives my head into the table. In case the metaphor isn’t clear, this process is a bit painful.
Friday evening I discovered that the geese of City Park all choose the same 15 minute window to fly into the park’s lake near dusk. Saturday, I found that the ducks in zoo adjoining the park move from one lake to the other at the very same time. Sunday I discovered the zoo’s bird house. Add to the mix the zoo’s annual Christmas lights display and you have the makings for ornithological serendipity.
