This week we are featuring a beautiful photo from Kevin German, who is based in Southeast Asia. The story behind the image makes it sing that much louder.

About this Image:

“In 2003, I was a senior at Washington State University and I was taking my first college photography class.  Up until then I had always taken photos for some one else.  For an editor. For a client.  Everyone but myself.  On a typical Thursday, I was assigned by the Spokesman-Review to travel to Deary, Idaho and photograph the Murphy family organic chicken egg farm.  When I arrived I felt as if time stood still.  There was a magic about the way they practiced life.  I took my photographs with the reporter and left.
The beginning photography class was to appease a last-minute requirement for my minor.  That week’s assignment was to photograph people.  Normally I would have just taken a few photographs on campus to get it over with, but after visiting the Murphy’s I was intrigued.  I returned that weekend with nothing but my film camera and a few rolls of T-Max 400.
That magic feeling came back again the moment I got there.  Their daughter Olivia was running around chasing chickens in her homemade clothes.  She seemed to be the fondest of one chicken in particular she named “Steve”.  She kept calling “him” by name while running next to it.  Steve finally gave in and she picked it up for a big hug.  The hug lasted for several seconds.  A wisp of wind came up from the left and sent a few stands of her hair into the air.
She then sent him down, giggled and said, “One time I squished a chicken so hard that an egg fell out.” – Kevin German

I really like this shot. You can see a ton of emotion just from her eyes. Very intriguing. Thanks for sharing.

Also the ways her fingers are interlocked shows home much she is connected with the farm and this particular chicken.

That’s quite a payoff at the end with that quote. Hilarious, cute & beautiful.
