I shot a quick portrait a while back for USNWR that ran in the magazine and in their issue of America’s Best Graduate Schools. I had most of my gear stolen just before this and had very little to use. It was my first assignment for them, so when Avi called, all I could say was yes to what ever he asked. I borrowed a Leica and a 50mm f/1 from a friend and set out. Cameras and lenses are just tools, but I really like to push my equipment when I am working, so using gear for the first time on an assignment for a first time client is an uncomfortable situation. Fortunately the subject was very open and relaxed. It made all my fumbling seem not so bad. The shots were pretty straightforward, but I got a real taste for shooting with a rangefinder. Now I just need to find a way to justify investing in a new system.
