One of my early stops on this sociological tour took me to Helen, Ga., a quaint little mountain town in North Georgia’s Appalachian Mountains masquerading as a German village. The place is a pleasant little dichotomy of traditional recreations like Hofer’s, a German bakery and cafe, and gimmicky souvenir shops filled with typical mountain town collectibles. While it may border on a caricature of itself, the love and care with which it was founded shines through. It’s that same dichotomy of reality and fantasy sharing a moment together in space and time that interests me most and excites me about documenting more of these little oasis.
