Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama is the oldest baseball park in the United States. I had the pleasure of wandering the park for The New York Times and then sitting in on an interview with former player Paul Seitz, who was the starting pitcher for the first integrated game in Birmingham. It didn’t used to interest me as much, but history has become more and more of a fascination to me. Just imagining the park on its opening day 100 years ago, with businessmen traveling the country to go to the game to see Jackie Robinson play is exciting. There was a team playing in the unbearable heat while I was there and they’re actually from my neck of the woods and playing on such a richly historic field.
It’s always nice to get a phone call from a photo editor saying they’d like to make a photo gallery of the images because there are so many they like. Sports and history buffs, you can read the article here and see the photo gallery with a few different images here.
