I shot a handful of assignments this month for AARP. First off, Michael, the Director of Photography for AARP Bulletin, is a really amazing and engaging editor to work for. He is very much about collaboration and using visual language beyond just photography to tell stories. When we began this assignment, it was a portrait shoot of three writers set in Hollywood. We had plans to use historical documentary references, the Hollywood sign, masks and even a bucket of rocks. Alas, it was not to be. The story took a shift, the three subjects turned into one, and we had to improvise at the last minute. Fortunately, the subject Bob McCullough, a former television writer, was very amenable and had great suggestions. I am also lucky that I have an old film and production studio near my house. This is what we ended up with.
