In May I made a quick trip north to Oregon to shoot portraits of University of Oregon student Nate Gartrell. Gartrell transferred from San Francisco State into the Oregon system following the California budget crisis that left its state university system in a bit of a shattered situation. The article discusses the exodus of California students into other states and focuses on Gartrell’s path into the University of Oregon.
On a bit of a sidenote, a huge thanks is in order to Sol Neelman for, well, just being in Portland. And keeping me company on the drive down. And bringing me to one of Portland’s zillion breakfast places (but the first one that I’ve been to with Salmon hash). Wish I had something bad to say about him, but there’s really nothing worth mentioning. Nothing at all.
