When something jolts me to make a picture, the only thing I’m interested in is the feeling behind that jolt, the emotional resonance of a situation. The past two summers I have tinkered with an underwater disposable camera when at the beach with my family. In 2009 I shot half of the roll and this year I finished that camera and one more. These photographs feel intrinsically more nostalgic, what with their flaws and the tones of faded memory. It puts the fate of my photographs back in the hands of chance and that loss of control allows me to focus on the only things that matter. Feeling. Being there. Fighting the waves. Letting go.
