Announcing Few and Far Between
LUCEO BELIEVES IN THE IMPORTANCE OF SUPPORTING SIGNIFICANT PHOTOGRAPHIC WORK.
Few and Far Between is an ongoing LUCEO group documentary project funded through LUCEO’s Project fund, the fund that lets us support significant photographic work from our members as well as photographers outside of LUCEO. This same program also supports our funding of other photographers through crowdfunding endeavors like Emphas.is and Kickstarter as well as micro-crowdfunding like Flattr. This same program also supports The LUCEO Images Student Project Award. You can read more about our programs here.
This collection of photographs represents LUCEO’s first installment in a group project focusing on industrial and population changes in rural America. To read the full project description, please visit the gallery here.
EVOLUTION OF FEW AND FAR BETWEEN
After many private discussions, the idea was born during talks at our biannual meeting in New York. The first trip took place subsequently bringing photographers Banks, Brinson and Slaby to Lebanon, Kansas in early 2010. Over time the project has grown to include towns from 8 different states and counting. These early trips led to a more concerted effort culminating in a two week journey of five LUCEO members through Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and Nevada in late August of 2011.

THE FUTURE OF FEW AND FAR BETWEEN
LUCEO will undertake at least two more significant group trips for the project, to be supported by LUCEO’s project fund. Once those trips are completed, the content will go into production, and our members will decide whether more trips will be necessary to complete the piece. The final project will appear as a book available in the LUCEO STORE, and a traveling exhibition with stops already scheduled in 2013. We will also be producing a multimedia piece including audio, video and still content collected by our photographers to be accompanied by an original musical score by LUCEO Partner Tyler Strickland.

A detail of prints installed on behalf of @harmreductioncoalition at the 58th Commission on Narcotic Drugs in #Vienna, #Austria. The work draws from 400 portraits paired with text written by each subject advocating for a more human drug policy that includes harm reduction among its tenets. #HarmReduction, as a practice, is a relatively simple and pragmatic approach to drugs which focuses on the issue through the lens of public health rather than through the criminal justice system (which, globally, can carry sentences up to and including life in prison and death.) Its adoption into formalized policy has been a steady and incremental journey that has spanned roughly three decades.
