This week we are featuring an image shot by David Walter Banks of musical extraordinaire Janelle Monae.
About this Image:
“I was drawn back to this shoot following a chunk of time obsessively and repeatedly watching the new video by Fun. for the song ‘We Are Young‘ featuring the lovely and talented Janelle Monáe. Janelle is one of those larger-than-life individuals whose presence consumes the room. The shoot took place in a dark basement in the Atlanta suburbs for The FADER years ago. It was decidedly an environment in which I would normally be less than thrilled to work. But after Janelle entered the room, it quickly became evident that location and light didn’t matter. It was all about her and the eloquent style and personae she exudes. She allowed me to follow her into the bathroom while she checked her signature hair, and then proceeded to sit in a small window seat, and belt out an acapella tune in here angelic voice. There I witnessed a little piece of magic, and met a kind soul who deserves all the recognition she has since received.”
