Photographing people on a tour is something photojournalists have to do often. Trouble is, it’s never that easy because you basically have to run backwards ahead of the tour, unless the group stops a lot.
I headed to Savannah, Georgia the morning after my best friend’s wedding in Charleston, South Carolina late last year. Missed connections (my photo contact didn’t hear her phone ringing off the hook) meant I was left wandering the large campus for over an hour trying to find the group of students on tour that I was assigned to photograph. Too bad I was so worried about missing the un-findable tour that I didn’t get to enjoy the gorgeous Armstrong Atlantic State University campus with its giant oaks and gardens. I finally found the group, thank goodness, and they were running late and hadn’t started the tour yet (thank you, universe). So then I got to start my running-backwards-marathon.
This story is about a student group called HOLA (Hispanic Outreach and Leadership at Armstrong Atlantic). They held a workshop called “Domingo Universitario” for Hispanic high school students and their families about why they should attend the school. The tour leaders on the tour I tagged along on were so articulate and I think they did a great job at convincing the group on why to choose their university.
I also photographed Melody Rodriguez, director and founder of HOLA in front of the Student Union building on the campus.
