Artist Talk with Matt Eich
Matt Eich will deliver an artist talk about the development of long-term projects and his approach to building relationships with the people he photographs while sharing two ongoing book-length bodies of work. Other topics to be discussed are methods for funding extensive documentary projects, collaboration and creative community.
The artist talk is connected to the work Eich will be showing in the festival, which is part of Enrico Bossan’s curation, “Hope”. This year’s main exhibitions, curated by Enrico Bossan and Elisabeth Biondi (on show at the 81 Front Street Storefront) are presented under the shared rubric PHOTOGRAPHY NOW: engaged, personal, and vital. They offer distinct perspectives on a shared theme: the state of documentary photography today.
Bossan’s show, entitled Hope, features the work of young photographers who, in his words, “neither provide a faithful representation of reality nor create an illusion, but who have impressed me with their ability to capture the essential aspects of life.” These artists include Olivia Arthur, Clemence de Limburg, Matt Eich, Simona Ghizzoni, Andrea Gjestvang, Sean Lee, Margo Ovcharenko, Andy Spyra,Mikhael Subotzky, Ali Taptik and Peter van Agtmael. Bossan grants that photography can portray the world at its bleakest, but suggests that it can also—and, in fact, must—remain oriented toward what lies ahead.

About Eich’s project, Carry Me Ohio:
“In an effort to give a voice to increasingly marginalized communities destroyed by nearly 150 years of unmitigated mining, Matt Eich documents the daily lives of the people in Southeastern Ohio. Once rich in coal, salt, clay and timber, this region has been stripped bare of all natural resources—its people left to fend for themselves with minimal opportunities, horrific housing conditions, and sub-standard schools. As occurs in so many impoverished areas, the fabric holding together these communities is slowly disintegrating, as the people become more and more demoralized, often turning to drugs. Matt’s ongoing exploration conveys their struggles—further exacerbated and contextualized by the current economic situation—while simultaneously pays homage to their strength and resilience in the face of such adversity.”

MAY 11, 2010
LUCEO co-founder Matt Slaby is a recipient of the annual Center Directorʼs Choice Award. The annual Center Choice Awards recognize outstanding photographers in three categories – Curatorʼs Choice, Directorʼs Choice and Editorʼs Choice awards. Kathy Ryan, Director of Photography for the New York Times Magazine, and Scott Thode, Editor-in-Chief for VII, judged the competition of some 6,000 images submitted from 24 different countries around the world. The Directorʼs Choice jurors and Newspace Center for Photography representatives noted – “Our selection is unified by a subtle elegance, a delicate humanity, and a sense of mystery, as well as a remarkable clarity of perspective and a high level of craft. As a whole, the images chosen speak to our primary interest in showcasing challenging contemporary fine-art and fine-art documentary work.” The Directorʼs Choice Award recognized work from Slabyʼs project on the American West, titled And Then They All Came Home.

LUCEO Selected for Photo District News 2010 Photo Annual
MAY 11, 2010
Photo District News (PDN) selected work from Slabyʼs project, My Diving Bell, for their 2010 Photo Annual. Shot through the windows of his rental car while travelling through Wyoming, Slaby remarked in his preface to the project, “Peeking out the windows of this peculiar car, the world had suddenly changed, refocused through these strange, little frames, their inset into the body of the automobile making them appear as awkward maritime port-holes. Lost in a sleepless haze, the metaphor seemed appropriate. It is how we travel, always peeking through a window into another world that is not completely ours, those foreign places we pass by at 65 mph, rapid-fire zoo exhibits, places we imagine as much as we experience.”

LUCEO Named to PDN’s 30 Emerging Photographers to Watch for 2010
MARCH 31, 2010
Photo District News has named LUCEO founding memberMatt Eich as one PDNʼs 30 for 2010. Says Eich, “After four years of being nominated I am really excited to have been included in this year’s selection for PDN30. In addition, I’m flattered to be in the mix with quite a few photographers that I really respect.” The selection was by Amber Terranova, Conor Risch, Jacqueline Tobin, Holly Stuart Hughes and Darren Ching. In the Editorʼs Note, Conor Risch said, “Look at the photographers in this yearʼs PDNʼs 30 class and youʼll find a solid refutation of the idea that “everyone is a photographer now…Perseverance and determination are common to all these photographers but equally notable is the individuality of their interests and styles… They tell stories that matter to them in ways that make them matter to viewers.”

LUCEO Announces Project Fund and Student Project Award
JANUARY 11, 2010
LUCEO is united in a common belief that, through these times of change, the still image continues to be relevant. We believe that history extends beyond the news-cycle, and that ordinary people and personal struggle are avenues through which we can explore the bigger issues facing our world. It is with this purpose that we have created the Luceo Images Project Fund and the Luceo Student Project Award.
Luceo Images Project Fund
LUCEO believes in actively encouraging the completion of significant personal bodies of work, which lack funding through mainstream outlets. In pursuit of this goal, Luceo will contribute a percentage of all editorial, commercial and corporate commissions toward the Luceo Images Project Fund. This fund exists solely to support the long-term projects of LUCEO’s member photographers. Every commission allows our clients to support significant photographic work.
Luceo Student Project Award
LUCEO also believes that developing photographers need support. To advance this cause, LUCEO pledges a portion of this fund towards the Luceo Student Project Award. This award will be disbursed annually to a talented student photographer in support of a significant and developing body of work. This year’s recipient will receive $1,000 along with mentorship for the project from one LUCEO member.
LUCEO and MJR Announce Gallery Show Entitled ‘Make Do’
JANUARY 6, 2010
LUCEO and MJR announced their group show entitled ‘Make-Do’ with an opening night on January 21, 2010. The show will feature a limited edition fine-art print publication distributed to the first 200 attendees. Large-scale reproductions of the publication pages will be displayed on the gallery walls. MJR and Luceo are photography groups determined to Make-Do with an industry in transition. This publication is part of a larger vision to strengthen independent platforms for expression and collaboration.
Editorial by Gillian Tozer: The role of the documentary photographer has changed dramatically over the last 20 years. No longer emblazoned in funding and dispatched to remote surroundings adjacent to ʻthe actionʼ, the photojournalist must now explore their own environment. This exploration of the familiar is perhaps what best aligns the two photography collectives of MJR and LUCEO. Issue One of Make-Do captures the cultural struggle within America as it embraces a ʻnewʼ era of change while desperately clinging to that which made it solid. Among the degradation and disarray, there are traditions, habits and memories that call out to be salvaged. What you will witness is a dialogue between the America that was and the America that is now. For those working outside of America the same theme pervades. This collection documents the youthful and local meanderings of each photographer. While each series is strikingly different to the next, what remains ubiquitous is a sense of stoicism in the face of an inescapable and united collapse. This subject of human resilience is not uncommon to photojournalism, but it is never cumbersome, nor can be disregarded due to the warmth and significance it emanates. These are everyday, fleeting moments, often stumbled upon, now marked in print.
