Stations of the Crossing
Drawing from real stories of immigrants crossing the southern border of the United States, Luceo created a series of images telling the story of immigrant crossings into the United States in a manner that pays homage to the religious iconography of the Stations of the Cross. Since current United States policy intentionally pushes immigration into the vast, treacherous interior deserts in a manner that costs hundreds of lives annually, the work underscores human rights concerns with increasingly harsh and inhumane immigration policies espoused under the Trump administration. The series tells a process-based story of a person making the crossing, beginning at their departure from their family and ending with their resettlement in the United States after struggling to make the challenging crossing. The work was presented at Photoville, transforming the interior of a shipping container into a church-like environment to showcase the work in situ.
